PureNChic have released that every country within Europe Celebrate Christmas differently.
So there are some traditional way people celebrate Christmas from all different covers of Europe.
In the UK (or Great Britain), Families often Christmas together. Most Families have a Christmas tree or even two in their house. The Decorating of the tree is usually a family occasion, with everyone helping.
On Christmas Eve a lot of families go to Midnight Mass. This is to remember the ones that have passed and will not be able to join you for Christmas and also to celebrate the birth of Jesus when the clock strikes 12.
Children believe that Santa Claus leaves presents in stockings or pillow-cases. These are normally hung up by the fireplace or at the end of beds on Christmas Eve. Children leave out cookies and milk for Santa for when we arrives on his busy night to have a break. Some leave Brandy but drink drive is not sensible so Milk is best.
In Great Britain the main Christmas dinner is eaten around Lunchtime 12-2 on Christmas day. Yummy Roast Turkey, roasted Vegetables and all the trimmings. No Christmas would be the same without Pigs in Blankets. PIGS IN BLANKETS! And of corse the dreaded Brussels Sprouts make their appearance.
You will find a Christmas cracker at every served place on the table. The crackers are pulled before or after dinner. Pulling of the crackers are normal done in a circle including everyone pulling at once. This is a symbol of a tight family bond. Inside you will find a bad joke but fun to read, a small trinket and of corse the Christmas crown. Everyone get involved and wears the crown for not only the dinner but most of the day. Everyone is a king or Queen at Christmas.
Desert is often Christmas Pudding. Traditionally the pudding are made on or after the sunday before advent. Four to five weeks before christmas. This is called “Stir up Sunday”. Everyone in the household must stir the mix and make a wish. Back in the old days a small silver coin or sixpence was added which would brig good luck to the person would was served it but now in 2014/2015 most use a £1 coin or £2.
Christmas day is for Family, eating and drinking but boxing day is for Drinking, eating and family. Just like Christmas. The main meal is served again near Lunchtime and this consist of the left overs from the Christmas dinner. Turkey Sandwiches and Bubble and squeak. What is Bubble and Squeak? Bubble and Squeak is an old English Tradition meal that consists of left over vegetable and Potatoes. This is mostly fried but can be cook in different ways.
In France, Nearly every French home at Christmas displays a Nativity scene or creche, which serves as a focus for the Christmas celebration. The creche is ofetrn people with little clay figures call Santons or little saints. In Addition to the usual Holy Family, Shepard’s and the 3 wise men.
In France, Santa Claus is called Père Noël (Father Christmas). In eastern France he is accompanied by Le Pere Fouettard, a man dressed in black, who brings coal to children that ave be bad.
The main Christmas meal is call Reveilon and is eaten on Christmas Eve or early Christmas morning after people have returned from the midnight church service.Christmas dinner starts with two appetisers which usually consists of both raw ousters and famous escargots de Bourgogne which is stuffed snail shells with butter, parsley and garlic.
Then, comes the main course which usually consisted of a roasted turkey accompanied by lama beans, green peas, diced potatoes and cooked chestnuts.
Green lettuce is then served as intermittence before the cheeses. Usually a “plateau de fromages”a full tray of 5 to 7 different cheeses is passed to each guest who cut their chosen piece with a special Festive cheese knife.
Then, the bûche de Noël is served. The bûche is a flat sponge cake which we cover with a chocolate mixed cream and roll up to form a wood log called “bûche” in French.Then the bûche is covered with chocolate icing and decorated to resemble a log. La bûche de Noël is usually served with Champagne.
After a little while coffee and liqueur can be served with chocolates or truffels but most the time both.
Most people in Spain go to Midnight Mass or ‘La Misa Del Gallo’ (The Mass of the Rooster). It is called this because a rooster is supposed to have crowed the night that Jesus was born.
After the midnight service, people walk through the streets carrying torches, playing guitars and beating on tambourines and drums. One Spanish saying is “Esta Noche es Noche-Buena, Y no Es noche de dorm” which means “Tonight is the good night and its is not meant for sleeping!”
Most families eat their main Christmas meal on Christmas Eve before the service. The traditional Spanish Christmas dinner is ‘Pavo Trufado de Navidad’ which is Turkey stuffed with truffles (the mushrooms kind not the chocolate) A lot of Families in Spain have seafood for their Christmas dinner. This can all kinds of different seafood, from shellfish and mollusks,lobster and crabs.
Sopa de Pescado y Marisco is a Fish and selfish Soup. This is found around most Spanish Families tables at Christmas time. Its is a classic soup for the holidays. Shellfish is always a part of the menu at any Spanish celebration and Christmas is no different.
In Spain, the next corse is called Segundo Plato. This will be Beef, Lamb, poultry or game served with rice or potatoes. Spanish Christmas dessert consist of Turron which is Spanish Almond candy and or Mantecados a Spanish crumble Cake.
Children have some presents on Christmas day, But most are opened at Epiphany (January 5th). Children believe that3 Kings bring them presents for Epiphany. They write letters to the Kings on Boxing day about what they want as presents. They leave shoes on windowsills or Balconies or even under the Christmas tree to be filled with presents. The children leave a glass of Cognac for each King, a Satsuma and some walnuts. They also leave a bucket of water for the camels that the Kings arrive on.
